Backup and Disaster Recovery

In a complete file-based environment, DNA Evolution can provide your pipeline the insurance it needs to quickly recover from failures – including operator errors, accidental deletions, SAN crashes and site-wide disasters. DNA Evolution mirrors your SAN to a low-cost LTO/LTFS tier and keeps multiple point in time copies - enabling you to time travel and recover your lost data.

Automated, Incremental Backup to LTFS

Built into every DNA Evolution system is the ability to setup fully automated backups. These automated backups run in the background, incrementally picking up changes and mirroring the changes to an LTO-5 tier. This provides you a RAID-1 like mirror for your SANs or any other file-based data. Additionally DNA Evolution mirrors to LTFS – giving you an exact mirror to low cost LTO-5 but providing the benefits of disk-like access.

Time travel with snapshots

Unlike RAID mirroring that mirrors all changes including file corruptions; DNA Evolution implements snapshots. Snapshots are incremental copies of changed data maintained by DNA Evolution. Snapshots enable you to perform a time travel of previous copies of your media thus providing the ability to restore previous non-corrupted versions of files or entire SANs. Normally, snapshots are implemented only on disk – but LTFS enables LTO-5 to act like disk and thus supports snapshots.

Free up your SAN, Mirror to low cost LTO-5

Mirroring traditionally happens to disk subsystems. So, either a portion of your primary SAN is utilized (RAID-1 etc.) or you need to setup another disk target for mirroring – both of which are expensive propositions. Instead, DNA Evolution enables mirroring to LTO-5 tape. LTO-5 is low cost and highly modular – setup a standalone drive (e.g. a standalone tape drive) or grow to a larger infrastructure where you can have multiple tapes available at the same time (e.g. a tape automation library).

Works in the background

DNA Sync is designed to mirror your SAN in the background without interfering with primary editorial tasks. This is enabled via throttles that can be setup by an administrator including bandwidth throttles and IOPS throttles. This ensures your editors do not suffer any performance drops.

LTO-5 makes it cost effective to have an offsite copy

DNA Sync and LTO-5 makes it very simple to have an offsite copy. Normally offsite copies require large amounts of bandwidth to mirror media offsite. However, DNA Evolution’s ability to make multiple LTO copies and the portability of LTO means you can protect your entire site simply via keeping one copy offsite.

Compatible with any SAN or media type

DNA Sync is built to plug into any SAN via a client of the SAN. This open interface allows DNA Sync to mirror from any SAN or NAS system including Avid Unity/ISIS, Facilis, Editshare etc. Further, DNA Sync operates at a file level – meaning you can mirror and protect any file regardless of codec or file type.
