Archive Bins, Sequences Or Entire Workspaces
DNA Evolution allows you to select entire FCP7 scratch disks or use XML to “check-in” bins, sequences and clips. The ability to archive entire scratch disks gives pipelines an easy way to put all related media for a project on LTO. Archiving via XML provides finer granularity and allows more selective archiving and Nearline for a project.
Browse MOV clips, View low res proxies
DNA Evolution’s web interface presents an “editor friendly” view of Avid media by showing clip-names rather than cryptic MXF Op Atom filenames. Further, DNA Evolution will present low res proxy views of Avid clips through its web interface. This allows editors to quickly identify clips and restore them as needed.

LTO-5 can sustain speeds of over 1.2 Gb/sec. DNA Evolution’s architecture squeezes every bit of that performance giving you speeds matching that of primary SAN systems.
Restore, Re-Edit, Re-Archive
DNA Evolution allows you to restore a sequence, workspace or bin and then make updates. DNA Evolution’s differencing engine can intelligently add to the previous archive without requiring all media to be recopied.

Editors can work natively in FCP7 without learning new concepts. DNA Evolution is built to work with XML, bins, sequences, projects and drop folders giving editors familiarity and thus enabling them to perform their own archives and restores.
Compatibility With FCP7 SANs
DNA Evolution is designed to work with XSAN, Editshare, Facilis etc. DNA Evolution can mount workspaces via UNC shares (overcoming drive letter limitations on Windows) and employs bandwidth throttling and IOPS throttling to ensure primary SAN tasks (editing etc.) are not interrupted.

As you receive more file-based content, DNA Evolution enables you to keep storage infrastructure costs down (SAN, Nearline etc.). At a fraction of the cost of Primary disk and Nearline disk, LTO-5 provides a modular and scalable platform – while DNA Evolution provides the intelligence to manage media between your primary SAN and Nearline LTO-5 tier.
Nearline At The Cost Of Tape
Traditionally, LTO served as an archival medium – while disk served as Nearline. However, with the introduction of LTFS and intelligent software like DNA Evolution you are able to get the performance and workflow benefits of Nearline disk while taking full advantage of the cost benefits of LTO-5.
Lower Media Costs, Lower Management Costs
Both DNA Evolution and LTO-5 offer cost advantages as you scale. LTO-5 offers one of the lowest costs in terms of media, maintenance and general management. Additionally, LTO-5 is designed to be a highly modular technology. You can start with a single tape drive but when needed – upgrade to an automation library – while buying the same low cost LTO-5 tapes. Whether you invest in a tape drive or library, your media can safely sit on a shelf while DNA Evolution can help you search and restore it back when you need it. The ability to take tapes and move it offsite also serves as a key benefit of LTO-5 versus keeping media on Nearline disk.
More Reliable, Future Proof
DNA Evolution utilizes LTO-5 as its storage medium and uses open LTFS to write data. Additionally, DNA Evolution keeps all media native (as files) and stores all metadata in open XML ensuring total data and metadata access.
Built on AAF
AAF and XML are open metadata standards. DNA Evolution keeps all metadata from Avid in AAF format. Metadata preserved in AAF has the best chance of being portable in the future. AAF is the reason DNA Evolution does not store and use proprietary Avid bin and project formats e.g. avb, avp files.
30 Year Shelf-Life
LTO-5 is built for a 30 year shelf life. With no moving parts and no need for magnetic refresh, LTO-5 tape represents a true replacement for traditional video tape.
Open Data via LTFS
LTFS (Linear Tape File System) is designed to be an open data format for tape that is supported by the three big manufacturers (IBM, Quantum, HP). Since DNA Evolution writes all tapes using LTFS, all content can be retrieved simply via drag n’ drop without DNA Evolution software.
